Like a moth to the flame, Valerie Ward flew too close to the fire. Signed by Rank Studios in England in the 1940s, a celluloid career seemed certain when she featured in films with James Mason and Eric Portman.
In her early twenties, she had already left one marriage behind in colonial Kenya. Named as a witness in the infamous ‘White Mischief’ trial in 1941, Valerie was also used to controversy and notoriety.
The pursuit of love would be her undoing, although it looked like she’d achieved the fairytale when she married wealthy businessman, Richard Barwick. As time moved on, Valerie discovered that life was about tough decisions and hard bargains.
